Newry's Brendan Matthews landed a unique double when taking the €80,000 top prize in the Con & Anne Kirby Memorial at Limerick for the second year on the trot.

The trainer lifted this substantial prize 12 months ago with the favourite Boylepsports Hero, owned by Dundalk bookmaker John Boyle. This time he kept the spoils for himself as he owns and trains Cable Bay, a black son of Foleys Follys. Starting as outsider at 6/1 in view of not having won a previous heat of the open contest, he enjoyed the run of the race and saw his strong stamina come to the fore where it mattered. Cable lay handy in third and when only a length and a half down approaching the third bend, his chance became very apparent as he's strong in a finish. Hugging the inside rail, he galloped his rivals into submission, beating Hawaii two lengths in the fastest time of the year (29.11) at the track.
